You shouldn’t have to trawl through the ‘Easily Aroused’ archives for too long before uncovering sufficient evidence to conclude that I’m a man who takes pleasure in the delights of female-only sex. I know, I know. I’m hardly the first male to admit to that particular interest; in fact, if there’s one fantasy that’s been genetically encoded into the DNA of most heterosexual XY chromosome owners, it’s the one about wanting to watch two sensuous women entwined in deliriously slow and passionate love-making.
In all honesty, that’s the primary reason why The Monkey’s Mask ended up as part of my DVD collection. After all, it’s not the most widely known of films. A few people reading this may be tutting after that last sentence, but I’m guessing the vast majority out there will be saying, “Huh? The Monkey’s what?”
Prepare to be enlightened.
The Monkey’s Mask is a slow-burning Australian noir thriller. The hard-boiled plot follows Jill Fitzpatrick, a streetwise ex-cop turned private eye, as she tries to locate Mickey Norris, a young female poetry student who disappears off the face of the earth one night. When Mickey’s mutilated body is found close to her home a few days later, her parents retain Jill’s services so that she can track down the killer.
The film is lifted from the novel by Dorothy Porter. It’s something of an unusual work, given that the entire book is constructed from poetic verse. And when you’re aware of that, it probably won’t be that great a surprise to learn that the plot is set in and around Sydney’s seamy poetry scene. Now you may raise your eyebrows at those last four words, but trust me, rhyming is only one of the things that these people excel at.
But the last two paragraphs don’t account for how the film came to be in my DVD collection. And here’s where I have to confess to the superficiality that sometimes consumes me. The fact is that as well as being a streetwise ex-cop turned private eye, Jill Fitzpatrick is a dyed-in-the-wool lesbian, and the film is as much about her sexual desires as it is about her need to discover the identity of Mickey’s killer and learn the reason for her death.
I learned about The Monkey’s Mask during a day’s casual ‘Net surfing. When I read about its lesbian subtext, and the profusion of soft-core woman-on-woman sex, I was already thinking of places from where I might acquire a copy. When I learned that Diana, the sophisticated academic and Jill’s voracious bisexual lover, was played by Kelly McGillis (yes, the very same Kelly who played the flight instructor squeeze in Top Gun
Now, before I’m entirely damned, I should mount a diminutive defence by making it clear that I ended up enjoying The Monkey’s Mask for reasons other than any voyeur eye candy. I have a taste for thrillers, especially the noir-flavoured variety, and The Monkey’s Mask has the same slow-burn quality as Lantana, another superb Australian thriller. TMM is certainly not to everyone’s taste: just check out some of the reviews on IMDB.com. “Stylish junk” and “Good if you like soft-porn for women, bad if you want movie-quality and ugly if you love detective-stories” are a couple of the less admiring headlines. But I don’t care (I suspect the guy who wrote the second header wouldn’t know a decent film if it smacked him across the face with a sound bite). I liked it as a piece of cinema, and so it’s staying in the collection.
Yet I still bought it for an entirely different reason.
As I’d hoped, my purchase rewarded me with several sex scenes between Susie Porter (the actress who brought Jill Fitzpatrick to life) and Ms McGillis. Ms Porter is attractive in an honest, girl-next-door kind of way, and Kelly, though evidently older than the actress who appeared in the aforementioned Top Gun, as well as Witness and The Accused, is still a very desirable woman, at least to my way of thinking.
Though their intimate scenes are all relatively concise, I’ll wager that they won’t bore those of you who share this particular predilection of mine. There’s the first seduction, where although it’s Jill who appears to take the lead, it’s pretty evident that she’s the one who’s being seduced. Then there’s a wonderful (and all too brief) scene where the two women sit naked before a wall of windows looking out across the Sydney skyline as they kiss and caress each other. There’s even a touching moment of semi-domestic bliss, where they share a foamy bath while Diana adroitly shaves Jill’s legs!
The stand out is the last time the pair truly blend flesh. They’re lying on Diana’s bed in a facsimile of the missionary position, Diana having assumed her rightful position as the dominant partner. Their breasts and loins are pressed tightly together as Diana kisses and caresses Jill, literally fucking her towards orgasm. Jill, distracted by the increasingly despairing events of the case, is struggling to come, and it’s at that point that Diana introduces a little erotic asphyxiation, which proves sufficient to bring the naive detective to a shuddering climax.
While any of the scenes may be titillating by themselves, it’s how they’re woven into the sexual tension that permeates the movie that gives them their true power. And having originally purchased it for far more nefarious reasons, I now make the recommendation that that’s how the film should be approached; as a piece of cinema that rewards cinephiles, who also happen to be aficionados of femme-femme erotica.
Go on. Spoil yourself.

I saw the trailer to this with a recent rental of mine, and I’m waiting my turn to receive it (by mail order rental). I’m surprised the film didn’t have that much advertising when it was released in Australia.
It’s another of those releases that can be summed up as ‘critically admired, but underwhelming in the publicity and box office departments’. Perhaps we can start building a cult reputation for the film here. I’m sure Ms McGillis wouldn’t mind…

Oh my… I’m the worst sort of person to watch thriller movies, as even trailers for Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride gave me nightmares (for a week, I’m afraid), so if I ever watch it, I’ll need a partner in crime. If the willing partner is a female, even better LOL.
By the way, this probably isn’t the best place to put this, but I’m having a hell of a time viewing your home page. All the other pages come up fine, but I try getting to the front of it all and get rewarded with a slap on the wrist and a “404 Not Found” error. Uhhh… Help? My vagina would appreciate it greatly LOL.
It’s not that scary a thriller - it’s a moody noir whodoneit with lashings of sex. But have a partner to hand by all means; in fact, I’d recommend it given the subject matter.
As to the site problems, I think there was a snag with the .htaccess file. I’m hopeful that it’s sorted now, but if you or anyone else is still experiencing difficulties, do send me an email…
